No, we only ask you to avoid the sun in the 4 weeks leading up to the first treatment, between treatments and for 4 weeks afterward. You cannot be treated safely with a tan and fake tan cannot be applied either.

You always need to wear goggles with light-based devices to protect your eyes. We will clean your face and apply a gel ( a bit like ultrasound liquid). The treatment is not painful, and no anaesthetic is required- patients describe it as like the ‘ping’ of a rubber band being stretched against the skin.

No. The skin is red immediately afterward, but this only lasts for a few hours. You can resume normal activities the following day.

No, unfortunately IPL is not well suited to darker skin tones as the melanin in the skin competes for the light and can cause burns- this is the same reason a tan is not a good idea. However, as mentioned rosacea does tend to occur predominantly in fairer skin tones. When it does occur in darker skin, there are alternatives for treatment.

It is possible to suffer burns with any light-based device, but this is extremely rare. We will patch test you first to get the correct settings for your skin making this less likely. There are no serious side effects and indeed even in the absence of any skin disease, IPL can be used at regular intervals to simply rejuvenate the skin.
